More Sun

January 28, 2008 - Finestrat, Spain

Every morning, we wake up and we see yet more sun. Even if we see a couple of clouds in the morning they disappear after a few hours and we see more sun. This morning it is about 12 degrees, and we think it is freezing even though it is still sunny. Every day so far for the last 3 and a bit weeks has been perfect weather. The only moisture we get is the dew on our tent. I think this place might have better weather than Australia.

We have been driving out to different climbing areas each day and getting a feel for the different crags as well as getting to know the area and finding our way round. Our Spanish is improving little by little. It is amazing what we pick up just by observation, half the time we don´t even realise we´ve learnt a new word. For example we know the word for furniture as we noticed alot of the shops have this written on their signs so one day we asked what it was and now we know. We have started taking Spanish lessons every Tuesday morning in a local cafe in Finestrat too. An English lady who is fluent in Spanish runs classes up there so we have joined in and hopefully our vocabulary will grow even more. We find our weekly trip to McDonalds is one of our best Spanish lessons as no one there can speak English at all, not even the basics. It is quite strange actually as even very Spanish tapas bars etc will still speak English so we have not really been put on the spot.

Ed has now got used to driving a left hand drive car too. It was very hairy the first few weeks while he got used to it and the Spanish driving rules, but now he can drive no problems. The road rules are abit wierd sometimes, especially going through roundabouts and if we hadn´t known the rules it would be easy to have a prang as their Give way rules are the opposite to ours.

The owners of the Orange House have just returned from their weeks holiday so we are glad to hand responsibility back to them. It was easy enough to manage the place but abit of a pain as we couldn´t relax. We´d come back from climbing in the evenings and then have to sit there and answer everyones questions when all we wanted to do was have our dinner and sit in front of the fire. The place was packed and we had a few people turn up unannounced so we had to find beds for people but all worked out well in the end.

Well as it is a beautiful sunny day again, we are going to do our cleaning chores, drink one more coffee, and go for a climb.
