Stuff We will Miss about England

October 6, 2008 - Fontainebleau, France

Well, the time has come for us to leave England.   We are really excited about our next big adventures and we are also very much looking forward to coming home to Sydney in a few months too.  But we are also sad to leave the UK and especially Yorkshire.  We've had a really good time here and while the weather has been abit to be desired, there are some wonderful things we will miss.

So for that reason we have decided to write a list...Stuff We will Miss about Yorkshire

1.  Tania and Nick

We have no idea what on earth we would have done without these guys.  They have helped us so much during our stay here from helping us get jobs and flats, letting us stay with them and storing our belongings, helping us find our way around the area and the way of life in Yorkshire, and countless other things.  We will miss them terribly and hope that this time it will not be so many years before we see each other again.  Thank God for Skype!

2. Halifax

What an awesome town Halifax is.  It's full of oldtime character, central to just about everywhere, great scenery, great cafes and has the best nightlife ever ... all within walking distance of home.  What more could one ask for?

3. The scenery

Yorkshire scenery is stunning.  We never got sick of it.   From the wild, bleak and barren moors to the lush green rolling country fields.  The canal towpaths, the rivers,  the historic packhorse ways.  The drystone fences, the narrow one-car roads with horses and carts still an everyday appearance.  Flowerdecked stone villages. Cobblestoned streets.  Ancient buildings and churches.

4. Cathedrals and Castles:

The Castles and Gothic Cathedrals still fascinate us.  The stone carvings and decorations are so intricate that it is impossible to catch every detail.  Your imagination runs wild, and you can just imagine people five hundred years ago going about their daily lives - the knights and kings and battles that went on.

5. Museums.

It has been just as fascinating to visit museums and historic houses.  We have learnt so much and seen some amazing things in these museums.  To see with our own eyes ancient artifacts, books, clothing (even burial clothing from Victorian kings/queens) and famous jewellery is beyond comprehension.

6.  Yorkshire folks

'Owts and 'Nowt (anything and nothing).  You Gor 'ret (you got it), Goin' downt 'road t'shop (going down the road to the shop).  Thems lad n lasses are proper nice (those guys and girls are really nice).  When we first arrived we couldn't understand a word they said to us.  We still don't!

7. Yorkshire pudding! (and cheap pub lunches)

8. Quick, easy and cheap travel to Europe

We still can't believe that we have managed to get 99p flights to France and Ireland.  Within two hours you can be gone from the British spring rain and be basking in the sun in Spain or France and all for a couple of quid.
