Last night in the USA

December 28, 2008 - Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, United States

Well that has got to be the quickest two months we have ever known.  We can't believe that tomorrow we will packing up and leaving the USA.  So soon!  Where has that time gone? It seems like yesterday that we were farewelling our UK friends.

We spent another couple of days in Vegas but didn't get much climbing in due to the snow and Eds finger.  The days had cleared up but the snow takes ages to melt and when it does it just runs all down the rock faces that we wanted to climb on.  We did manage to get on one route that we had been eyeing up for weeks though which was good, we would have been disappointed leaving without getting on that one.  It ended up being one of our favourite climbs, perfect features and excellent fun moves so it was a good finale to end on.  It was so cold though, feet and fingers were so painful and numb from touching the rock so we had to keep tramping back up through the snow to a sunny patch to thaw ourselves out before getting back on.  Fortunately for us, Vegas is a place that you can't possibly get bored in so we had more than enough to keep us occupied while waiting out the weather.

We then came back up to Kris' place in Palm Desert last week and hung out with her.  She has two other friends staying with her (both rockclimbers) so it's been lots of fun getting to know them too.  We have been spending the days up at Joshua Tree national park climbing and bouldering and have really enjoyed it even though it has been pretty cold up there too.   Unfortunatley, whilst in Palm Desert we also managed to become shopaholics and as a result have an additional bag and a massive bouldering mat to bring home!  Oops, we hope Sandra is reading this and comes to the airport prepared with a trailer!!

We will leave with very mixed feelings.  We have really enjoyed our trip here.  We've loved that we've experienced climbing in such world famous areas, places that up until now we have just seen on dvd's and dreamed about one day visiting.  We've loved the fun stuff especially the theme parks where we were able to act like a pair of kids and nobody looked at us funny.  Deb especially loved the theme parks as her parents took her there as a kid and it brought back so many memories - thanks mum and dad, you're the best :-)  But we will miss Kris terribly and have already started planning our next climbing trip where we can meet her halfway.  Just have to get back to reality and get a job to fund it we suppose!
