Wow, I already have so much to say I'm going to summarize as much as possible.
Easter Sunday the 23rd.
I arrived at about 3:30pm Sydney time and found my hostel. It's called the Jolly Swagman (those of you familiar with Waltzing Matilda will understand the reference) and its full of Germans, French, and other Europeans. But no Americans or Aussies. It's very much a youth hostel with common areas and a kitchen for you to cook whatever. But there is no big drinking area like Kabul in Barcelona and its much quieter at night.
The German girl in my room, Silvia, directed me on a walk down to Mrs. MacQuarie's chair which is through a park and has a nice view at the end of the point of the opera house and the bridge. There were 3 different wedding couples having pictures taken there. Lots of families with picnics as well.
I continued walking back down the other side of the point and made it through the Botanical Gardens. I had a wander about and frankly was quite creeped out by the famed palm grove which is full of flying foxes (i.e. huge bats that made tons of noise) which i was sure were going to crap on me at any second. I continued on to walk around to the Opera house, which completely took me by surprised when I walked around the corner. It was like no kidding- there it is. I was not exactly blown away but more like oh okay so now I've seen it. I went in and bought tickets for a comedy show on Tuesday night (tonight(which was awesome)) and decided to cough up the $32 for a show rather than the $20 for a tour. Good decision. Then.... on to Circular Quay (pronounced "key" btw). Circular Quay is basically where all the ferries depart and so there are the usual harbourside restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops, nothing too fancy. But nice. At night the view of both the bridge and the opera house from Circular Quay is spectacular though.
At this point it was time for Easter Dinner so I wandered a couple blocks up from Circular Quay, hoping to find a. a chinese restaurant (no reason just what i wanted), and b. something that was slightly less expensive than the quay. Well, I found a, but not b. It was probably the best food I've had in Australia (which is definitely not saying much), and my first real meal at a restaurant by myself! Its lame that here you have to pay separately for everything. Like in Indian and Chinese restaurants you have to pay for rice! Anyways at a moderately nice place it cost $50 for dinner with no desert and one glass of wine, but it was Easter right? Then I took a cab home cause I had no idea where the bus stop was, what bus to take, and where it should take me... But it was a cheap trip and well worth it after a full day of walking.
