Last stop... we're coming home!!

June 10, 2008

So this is it - our last blog from India!

On Thursday afternoon, we visited Trivandrum zoo, being the cultural people that we are. At last we got to see our tigers! We've been searching for them all over India with no luck so seeing them behind bars was the next best thing. We also visited a Cathedral - Jo's pay back time for all those temple visits with Pragya :) !

Got up bright and early on Friday morning to fly from Trivandrum to Mumbai, via Bangalore. We flew on Kingfisher airline which contrary to what we thought, is actually rather posh. We're not exactly slumming it on this gap year trip, with the nice hotels, houseboat jaunt, personal chauffers (well, sort of) and breakfast in bed! We have concluded however, that people in the state of Kerala are lovely but not very bright (they can't add up - our bills were wrong twice, can't follow directions - our taxi driver had to ask 4 people the same thing in the sapce of 1 minute, and can't tell the time). We had a 6 hour stopover in Bangalore and arrived in Mumbai that evening. The monsoon arrived in Mumbai with us and hasn't let up since :( !

We are staying with a lovely family friend of Pragya's in a quiet area of Mumbai. Unfortunately, it's nowhere near any touristy places - atleast 1 hour by taxi/bus, made worse by the fact that the monsoon has caused lots of flooding. So we've had to satisfy ourselves with a bit (ok, a lot) of shopping and our days have gone something like this: sleep, eat, shop, eat more, shop, rest, eat, sleep :) That is literally all we have done. The monsoon rain has been torrential so we've had to dive out of the house whenever it calms down a bit. However, we appear to be cursed because every time we even think about going outside, the rain gets *even* heavier. Last night, we cooked dinner for our host as she's been working very hard to prepare us lots of nice food. We managed to stretch to making pasta with veg and sauce. The leftovers reappeared for lunch today, along with chinese vegetables and indian chappatis - a multi-cultural experience!

So, that was our Indian Odyssey then! It's been lots of things - colourful, tiring, great fun, challenging, mad - an experience to say the least! Don't switch off yet though cos we'll be putting photos up on here when we get back to the UK!
