Day 5

April 15, 2008 - Delhi, India

Today was our first day on placement in the community centre of a deprived area of Delhi. Even though we didn't do very much, we are all worn out, but still felt we ought to let you know what we're up to, so we've sneaked downstairs while everyone is asleep!

Had to get up very early for the first time in days..well..7.30, but its still too early for us! Took ages to hail a rickshaw, but managed in the end. When we got there, the hospital corridors were crammed with people waiting for treatment. We might get a chance to observe this tomorrow. We sat with the really cute nursery kids and helped in an english class. Then it was time for homework class. The kids were so polite and probably better at English than us.

We all (us and 5 other Gappers) were given an Indian cookery lesson by Sushma, our homestay 'mum'. It was very tasty considering it was our first time making Paranthas (fried chappatis with veg stuffing) and black daal and potato with capsicum.

Off to bed now otherwise we might get locked in the office with the mosquitoes!

Glad you're learning to cook at last. I was beginning to think you would spend your life eating beans on toast!

Ah yes. Paranthas. They're flaky and somewhat more elaborate than chappatis or rotis. The dough is rolled out and brushed with ghee or oil, folded and brushed with ghee or oil again, and folded again to form a layered slice. This is then rolled out again and then put on a hot griddle and brushed with more oil. The heat makes the layers of dough swell and puff, resulting in flaky, pastry-like flat breads.
Am I right? Were yours like that? xxxx

Brian, yours would never have been like that. You just cut and pasted this out of one of Gail's cookery books!!!!!!!!!!

Well done, Jo and Pragya, you can cook for us anytime when you get back!!!!!!!

In Actaion and just managed to book our seats home - sob, sob. Sounds like you're having a good time - expecting lots of clever meals from you when you return. If you have time we're on the webcam on 17th at 12.00 - gran in white t.shirt - both trying to look cool! Very quiet here and the beach is empty apart from three ducks. Had log fire instead of candles for Mum's birthday - Uncle Denis said it made sense as she would have had to have so many candles! Over and out!!xx
