Last day in Delhi

May 10, 2008 - Delhi, India

Had a lie in this morning :) but then we had to pack :(

We went out for lunch to a really nice cafe and ate lots. Wish we'd discovered it sooner cos we would have gone more often. This afternoon, all the gappers went to a slum area to visit the TB project that's been set up there. It's an NGO to treat people with TB on their doorstep, so that they don't have to travel and take time offwork to get treatment, as they cannot afford to. TB is really common in the slums because the people live in such cramped conditions and are malnourished. The doctor who set it up showed us around the slum which was the worst we've seen yet - it was basically a rubbish tip with cardboard houses on illegal land. She explained how the project (Operaton Asha) works and how the community is very involved in helping. Places in the neighbourhood eg temples, shops and houses help out by providing space to store the treatment boxes for patients in the area. The priests, shopkeepers etc are trained to make sure the patients take their medication correctly so it's a very basic but worthwhile project. Afterwards, we went back to the doctor's house where she gave us lots of tasty Indian food and now were not hungry for tea!

Setting off early tomorrow morning for Amritsar so we'll hopefully update you soon. xx

Well that's it - first half over. Great photos- glad to see you're using your artistic talents! Off to Judith and Fins wine tasting without dad as he double booked himself - hope my head won't be too sore tomorrow!
I wonder where you'll be sleeping tonight as it's 5pm here, so hopefully you've found a bed somewhere.
