Ottawa

October 23, 2007 - Ottawa, Canada

Well, a visit to the capital of Canada was never planned but we got warning off our kiwi friends that we met in Montreal that Toronto was not all that exciting. So seeing as we were going to spend 5 days there, we decided to cut Toronto short and go to Ottawa. Thank god we did...

Ottawa was a real breath of fresh air. Home of the houses of parliament (copy of ours really!) including an imitation Big Ben, vibrant outdoor markets and some of the most haunted buildings in Canada - this could be due to the fact that the majority of the city is built on ancient burial grounds!

We stayed in a converted prison - the HI Ottawa Jail, supposedly one of Ottawa's many haunted buildings :P. This was a wicked place to stay eight floors of big old stone rooms with bars apparently when this jail was shut down, it was transformed into a hostel within six months! we stayed on floor five in a room called Mc Gee named after an Ex prisoner, floor eight was death row! we walked up there it was incredibly eerie signs stating that flash photography wasnt allowed? maybe it disturbs the lost souls - we didnt take any notice of these signs as you can see by the photos. We also got ourselves on a Haunted tour of the city where a lady in Big black cloaks and a hat guided us round the dark streets with a lantern. Where we visited some of the other haunted buildings and heard some of the ghost stories from way back, including some actual ghost activity in the Bywater Museum which has daily ghost activity.

The weather here was freakishly hot, reaching 27 degrees 8). In Canada. At the end of October!!! But we weren't complaining...

As well as the ghosts, Ottawa is also home of the beaver tails - a famous fried pastry with maple syrup and other calorific treats. Beverley is astounded by all the beaver paraphernalia we have discovered on our travels! We have since discovered that beavers are the national animal of canada!

Toronto next - hmmm can't wait!
