London, Ontario

October 25, 2007 - London, Canada

Hey there people

Well lots to write about here, but it's all a moan i'm afraid -  the place was a hole to put it nicely. As we cut Toronto so very short we had to find somewhere between Toronto & Chicago to stay for a couple of nights.  Supposedly a gorgeous university town, but thats a lie. Our hostel was situated conveniently across the road from the Salvation Army, so lots of unsavory dodgy characters hanging around the streets.

We planned to stay here 3 days if anything to save a bit of money, as we seem to have gone way over budget! not good.. America is very expensive for everything! Well ACBB Backpackers seemed to be the only hostel in London, according to the owner it had only been running a couple of years and her partner ran another one in Niagara.  The house that this hostel ran from was very old and in extreme need of some renovation and had a certain stink to it! it almost smelt like dead animals. After out first night we both woke up covered in bites and we thought ummmm strange considering the time of year and surely mosquitoes wouldnt still be out in force? but didnt think anything else of it.  It was only till that evening and we were sat with one of the other girls in the hostel watching a Halloween film that I mentioned to her if she had any bites, she looked shocked and promptly left to fetch the owner.  The owner didnt want to accept liablility but mentioned that New York is currently the Bedbug Capital of the USA and that they were expecting to get them at some point, she then went on to say that we couldn't have been bitten here as theses bites take 2-9 days to come out and we had only been there one night - which was a lie.  The following morning we woke with no fresh bites, but the morning after that we woke covered in them and another person in the hostel had also been attacked. Conveniently the owner had decided to spend some time at the other hostel in Niagara Falls for a couple of days ... everyone in the hostel was in panic and moving rooms all over the place, and then one of the girls then found a dead mouse under her bunk! That would explain the smell!  Luckily this was our last day here and we were catching the overnight bus to Chicago.

So to summarise London... don't bother this was the most southerly town of Canada you could get to before entering the USA and what a shame of a place, The only bonus was the $4 matinee at the local cinema. of course this is the reason we came to Canada!

Hi you two
We're missing you, not seen anything since London 24th Oct. Is Chicago really 'the windy city'? Hope all is going to plan and the Greyhound travel is OK. Pleased to meet your Mum and Auntie Sheila last week Bev - and Toby of course. Hope to pop in and see them today some time.
Love G&G
