Wow the humidity in Fiji practically knocked us out as we climbed out of the little plane from LA. Fijis wet season (which we found out after we arrived!) is actually hotter than their dry season. We immediately loved Fiji everyone is so so friendly and smiley, as we entered the queue for customs there was a little trio of Fijians in traditional costume singing ! such a refreshing change from the unfriendly Americans we had been experiencing for the past 5 weeks.
We spent our first couple of days in Nadi in a brand new Hostel by the sea called Smugglers while we decided which Island we were going to. We managed an entire one hour on the beach before we decided that it is way too hot to bare any longer even the sea didn’t seem to cool you down as it is like stepping into a warm bath.
Two days later we were on a boat traveling to the Magnificent sandy Islands of Fiji. We decided that we would travel to one island for a week to again save some money, a lot of travelers decide to spend a night on each of the Islands and try and experience as many of the 300 or so Islands that there are in the Pacific Island group! After a couple of hours on the boat as we passed some of the most amazing islands I have ever seen we arrived at our Island Wayalailai one of the bigger Islands of the group. Most of the Islands have very basic facilities - electricity between 6pm and 10pm, little thatched Bures (beach huts) One communal room where all the guests would collect and eat meals you have to rely on them for all food as nowhere to buy anything and the beach! As the week passed on by the meals got from bad to worse towards the end the Vegetarian was given a spoonful of plain rice and a slice of Pineapple for the majority of meals! We and some of the other guests nicknamed the Island The Health Farm! A really good way to loose weight!
After the week we headed off back to mainland on possibly the roughest sea! The boat actually had to stop a couple of times due to the force of the waves. We then headed off East to the other side of the Island and stayed in a backpackers in Pacific Harbour not too far from Suva the capital of Fiji where we spent most of our days relaxing by the side of the pool until we both started with stomach problems even 24 hour fasting didn’t help it – we think the result of the food at the Health Farm. It got so bad we could barely leave our room and we had to get some Immodium quickly and the closest place for a chemist was Suva! ARRRR 40 minute bus journey which turned into 1 hour (in Fiji time) and no toilet… a memorable occasion.
After Pacific Harbour we headed back West towards Nadi and stopped off at a little place called the Beach house. A beautiful place with clean little Bures, a great communal area and outside kitchen and pool on the beach! We instantly loved this place. During the week we were got chatting to people and why there were 2 way mirrors all over the place and writing on the walls “Thanks for voting for me” we then realised that this was the place that the 2nd series of Celebrity Love Island was filmed Wow!! How cool
We spent the last 3 nights in Nadi mainly sitting by the side of the pool before out flight out to Melbourne.
