Do you hear my voice Nothando?

October 31, 2008 - Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

If you ever go to Plettenburg bay, be sure to stay at the 5 star Nothando backpackers and not just because you get to hum Abba tunes all the time!  They have beautiful ensuite rooms and huge beds with crisp white linen that is turned down every morning.  Our room had a wall of built in wardrobes, where one of the doors led though to a kind of Narnia esq bathroom hidden behind.  There used to be quiet knocking sounds in the morning coming from that bathroom, which Nic assures me was just the staff getting on with their cleaning outside, but I still have an incling that Mr Tumnus was in there, struggling to get out of the closet!

Plett is the Riviera of the Garden route, with opulent houses built into the hillside overlooking gorgeous beaches and a coastline where you can watch whales migrating and dolphins playing in the surf (not that you can do this in the French Riviera, but you know what I mean!)  The town sits high above the beach and is full of bars and restaurants as you would expect of any seaside holiday town.  It feels safer and more integrated here, and we are told it is safe to walk around the town at night, although still warned not to venture onto the beach after dark.  We have most of the day on the beach, although we hire an umbrella to protect our poor pink noses!

It's Friday and the queues at the ATM and in the Supermarket shows that it's payday in Plett!  After a strenuous climb up the hill from the beach we near our hostel to the sounds of a busy market and a local band playing just across the road.  It's a clear reminder that we are actually in Africa and not the Riviera after all.  Nic and I crack open a beer (or a Sundowner as they call them here), and sit in the hammocks listening to the African beats and loving the start of our year long adventure!

Hey, just connected to you guys for the first time and it's great to read the whole trip from Edinburgh to the fantastic sounding Nothando so far. The trepid explorers are now fully intrepid - I hope you've found suitable T shirts! As I write this at 11/11/11/08 and listening to the strikes of Big Ben I wish you both, and your intermittent travelling companions, a safe and peaceful journey with max excitement and many reflections, God speed, Alexx

Hey girls! Glad you enjoyed SA and shame you didn't get to visit Ansie & Fred in PE! Still, sounds like you are having a fab time.

Bummer about the rugby yesterday...we were thinking about you both!
