Sheik, Rattle and Roll

January 29, 2006 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

A nice 5.20 start.. Not that I get much sleep. Finally stop crying as get on the plane!.. Wuss.
Great flight, with Emirates. Loads of films on demand.. including Sound of Music!.. Am tempted to use the sky phone to txt Mother Ayotte and let her know.
Arrive late at night.. Strange seeing all the Sheiks in dresses.. Very humid outside.. Taxi to the Hilton.. Get some room service, have a Jacuzzi and fall into bed.
Have a terrible nights sleep.
Lush brekkie.. Which you expect for 250 squids a night! Wander round the Gold & Spice souks and "old Dubai". Which were mainly cheapo plastic tat & lighters. Crazy chanting and singing during prayer that is so loud and echoes around the tiny streets. Go to several of the Dubai Museums.. School Museum, Heritage House and Museum of Dubai, which was underground and had awesome aircon! Took a boat over to the other side of the water and had a walk up the river. Couldn’t really find anywhere for lunch so just bought some chapattis and crisps. Water taxi back across the river, which costs a penny!
Have a swim up on the roof
Then go out for dinner to an Iranian restaurant.. Posh mix of "kebabs" for dinner.. (Which tasted a lot like sweaty socks?) Followed by a taxi to the "Burj Al' Arab" for a cocktail.. Only to find that the Lonely Planet were having a larf.. And they wont let us in, as we need to have meal reservation! (if only I hadn't eaten the sweaty sock)
Instead, have a drink at the "poor mans" hotel next door and look over at the 6 star hotel.. Who wants there own private Butler anyway??? Then take the 20 min taxi journey back.
