Arriving in Bangkok

January 31, 2006 - Bangkok, Thailand

Tired! Tired! Tired!
Arrive shattered at early o'clock in Bangkok.. Take about 3 days to get through passport control.. Then get a taxi (thankfully air-conditioned) to the hotel.. Fortunately can check in early, as soooo, sooo tired.. just HAVE to have a little sleep.. I also haven't washed in over 48 hours, so am loving the shower (aimed at vertically challenged.. And perfect for me!)
Drag myself up a few hours later and go to the Grand Palace.. Shoulders and legs must be covered, to respect Buddha.. I have to borrow an attractive lime green shirt. The place is amazing.. Unbelievably over the top, so colourful and gold paint and mirrors everywhere - not really ornate though? Have first taste of Farang (foreigner) separation - as there is one place for shoes. Walk back, see all the street sellers and get accosted a few times. Cruise down Kao San Road - Mental!.. All the fake goods and so cheap. Have a swim at the hotel to cool off.
Head to a place near the hotel, which I'd spotted in the taxi, that had lots of locals in. Decide to try something new and experience my first taste of Panang Curry.. Awesome.. Tho the waitress is very unimpressed that I cant even say "Hello" in Thai. Both eat and have beers and the bill comes to 1 pound!??
Rice and noodles for brekkie.. Mmmm!? Took a taxi to Wat Po to see the 40ft golden reclining Buddha. Walked to the harbour and took a boat to Wat Aron. Then took Taxi boat up to Grand Central - couldn’t get on first boat - people even hanging off it.. Woman shouting "moment, moment!" Took the Skytrain to Siam Square - was the more well dressed and office workers. Couldn’t find much - lots of shopping malls. Taxi back and then change and go to the Thai Boxing.. But Lonely Planet lets us down again and we have an hour and half to wait! Wander to marble palace. See Tim (Femcare's cousin) in a taxi at the lights!? Saw Buddhist monks.. Even one with a zimmer!
"Thank you. Please move round this is the betting area" …Obviously Farang in the wrong spot! Meet Tim at Kao San and have some dinner. Taxi to Ping Pong land!.. Very sleazy, lots of pro's. There is a crazy midget in the blokes toilets who gives back massage!? And the lady in the womans cleans the toilet seats for you
