Suspended in the air

February 20, 2008 - Meteora, Greece

Well, last day in Athens, it was fun, it was grand.  We had religion all morning...and we were supposed to go to the Byzantine Museum, but it was closed because of the snow.  Silly Athenians, not prepared for snow.  So what it's the first time they've had snow in three years?...So then Erik, Brock, Jennifer, and I went for souvlaki, but our favorite shop was closed, so we settled for another one down the street.  My yarn shop was also closed, so I didn't get to buy new colors :(  I packed everything up, and then a bunch of us went to Brettos, a fun little bar in the Plaka.  Claude and our other Greek friends were there, so it was fun to hang out with them again.  Although, let me just emphasize the frustration and difficulty that goes along with not being able to understand a different language.  Claude did not understand me at all, nor I him.  Argh.  Well, we went dancing for a bit too, which was fun, but we were all sad we had to leave.  We'll get to see them on April 18/19th when we're back in Athens though, so hopefully it will be a fun reunion!  We left for Meteora by bus, and we stopped at Eleusis and Thermopylae.  Eleusis is where the entrance to Hell is, and we all got tickets to go!  Thermopylae was cool because it is the site where the movie 300 takes place.  SPARTA!  Ha~it was neat to see.  Anyway, we arrived in Meteora, and we had some time to explore before dinner.  Sam, Michelle, Molly, Kelly, and I walked around the town, which is very quaint place.  We climbed up and up and up, and sat on a wall and watched the city.  Some nice old lady tried to talk to us in Greek.  We think she wanted to know where we were staying, and if we wanted to come stay with her?...again, language barriers make the simplest things so hard to understand!  Today we visited two monasteries, Stephanos and Valam, up in the hills.  Oh, Meteora is translated as "suspended in the air", and when you see the mountainous landscape, you'll understand why.  The monasteries are built on top of these perilous peaks, and before 1920, you could only get up there by being pulled up in a cage.  The sites are absolutely beautiful, and it really can't be captured in photos.  Another exciting thing~we saw a flock of sheep in the road!  Haha, yeah, it was random.  And I must mention what I had for lunch.  Marit, Sam, Rachel, Alicia, Liz, and I went to a pizza place, and it was absolutely fabulous.  And of course we had to stop by a delicious looking bakery...I got a cup of chocolate/vanilla custard pudding stuff with some cake at the bottom.  Mmmm.  We also had some delicious orange cake soaked in some honey at dinner.  I am spoiled here.  No doubt about that.  Tomorrow we're off to Delphi!  6 hour bus ride~woohoo!
