Weather: C O L D and R A I N Y and dark by 4pm.
Well, where did I leave off last? The fire alarm. Right. Well, since then, there has been all kinds of drama. Monday night was a Full Moon, and we all know what kind of weirdness that can bring around.
The first thing that happened is that I exploded the can opener. This is one of those old-fashioned hand crank devices, and I was trying to open a can of raviolli for lunch, and it just exploded into about 6 pieces. So I had to spend about 20 minutes prying in to the can with a spoon and a steak knife and it was not that pleasant. So if you have a survival kit or zombie apocalypse kit, make sure you have at least one can opener, because life is rough without one.
Then on Halloween I went to the Science Centre! It was way exciting. They have a huge Imax Theatre where you wear the 3D goggles and it feels like you're moving. It was really fun. And it is full of science toys you can play with. They had this platform you stand on, and spin a bike wheel, and then the platform you're standing on starts to spin! There was a light going through a tube that you could hold a magnet to and because it was electromagnetic, the light would bend. There were also some spinning platforms with sand on them and different tools you could use to make designs in them...there were so many things I can't even list them all, and it's sounding like a giant kindergarten, and maybe it kind of is, but science is basically magic that WORKS!!!! I had a great time.
For Halloween, I went to a party at the student union club. There were a ton of people there. I just wore some bellydance stuff and went as a bellydancer. After that, we went and played in the cloisters and the sections of the giant castle that is my school that they keep unlocked at night. There are several castle-like structures around Glasgow, and they light them all up at night, so it was really cool.
Then there was some more drama. Someone who I won't name asked me out over a text message
and I had to try to find a nice way to say no in a TEXT. Well, you do what you can. Either I'm just old fashioned or people jump straight into dating here. So that might be awkward now. I hope not. There's no reason for it.
I workshopped a chunk of the novel I've been working on and I was terrified I was going to be DESTROYED and the prof was going to hate it. Strangely enough, he said it was well done, even "skillfully"! Of course there were some things he didn't like, but there was no Angry Email like we're all afraid of getting. Overall though I think it was assessed as stronger than my first submission. So I was pretty stoked about that.
Monday night it was a full moon. It makes weird things happen everywhere, but it seems to be even stronger around Scotland. The Celtic history and people all that, maybe. I went to a park with some people and we did a Celtic tradition of peeling an apple in one piece (that's hard!) and throw it over your shoulder. The way it lands can tell you something but we weren't really too concerned about that. Then you eat the apple and put the core under a log for the faeries ![]()
On the way there, though, we saw a girl laying on the sidewalk; a few people were kneeling down checking her eyes with a flashlight and there was blood spattered along the sidewalk. We were going to try to help but then an ambulance pulled up. When we walked back home a few hours later, there were police cars and cops standing around and a big part of the park was police-taped off. I don't know what happened but I hope she's okay.
Anyway...stay tuned, because the tentative plan is Edinburgh on Friday.
