I am in love with Seaside! It is truly my favorite beach town ever. I really explored the town today, visiting every shop on Broadway Street. There are so many great shops here. This is one town that really got it right. There are some big chain stores here out on the main highway, but downtown is very cute and quaint.
The weather has been perfect. It was about 60 degrees today, overcast and drizzly this morning, with the sun coming out for the afternoon. One of the shop owners told me that there was snow on the beach just a week ago. My timing was perfect. The weekend is supposed to be really nice.
I love my room. I have a beautiful view of the ocean (I’ve included pics for you). I sleep with my curtains open so I can see the ocean as soon as I wake up. I love it. Oh, I also have a fireplace! It’s actually kind of romantic. Ha! Oh well.
I visited the Seaside Museum today, spending an hour and a half with my new friend Roy, a retired Engineer with such a passion for his job at the museum and the history of Seaside. His Great, Great, Great Grandfather was one of the original settlers in this area. He was one of six men killed by Indians at the beginning of the gold rush. He shared lots of stories with me as his wife bellowed from another room that “the museum is now closed”. I was hoping to see some old pictures of Seaside’s carousel where Dad worked when he was young. I wanted to get an image of how it looked here during those years when Mom and Dad were young and came here to hang out. This man and the museum really focused on Lewis and Clark and the first settlers here. There weren’t any pictures from later years. I asked him when the carousel was put in and he said “the carousel?”. Oh well. I did go see the old carousel which is now in the “Carousel Mall”. It was kind of sad seeing it inside a mall, like seeing a lion in a cage.
I don’t remember ever feeling so relaxed as I do here. It’s nice travelling alone, doing what I want, when I want. I’ve realized that I think too much and talk too much. It’s nice having a little break from my self and just enjoying the beauty around me. I’m eating right, drinking lots of water, getting lots of exercise and feel really great. At night, I wish I had you all with me. I’d love to go out to dinner and have drinks and do the night time scene here. We’ll have to come back and explore the night life together – maybe when we do the Seattle trip we can come down here for a couple days.
Tomorrow I’m spending the day in Portland. I’m going to the flee market under the bridge in the morning. Anyone need a fork twisted into a bracelet or some clothing made from hemp?
Ha! I just uploaded my pics and from them you'd think I've hardly left my room. Almost all of them of pics of the view of my room. I swear I've been out, I just didn't take a lot of pics yesterday. Today I will, so you can get a feel for the town.
Love ya and missing you!!
Jan
