Bosnia and Herzegovina

May 15, 2012 - Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

I'm keeping my promise!

Selcuk ended up being surprisingly great! I was at the hostel with my friend Azzah and we met some wicked people. For my full day there, I went on a guided tour of Ephesus, the temple of Artemis, and the Ephesus museum. It was going to be just me on the tour, which would be great value for my money but probably a little awkward. I was waiting for pickup and another guy at the hostel decided to come. I was really glad- he was a lot of fun and the three of us had a great time! Also, because of him, we paid extra to go into the terrace houses they are currently excavating. They ended up being my favourite part of the day! The mosaics were out of this world! Ephesus overall was fantastic. Hands down the best ruins I've seen. The preservation and restoration is really something. Hopefully I'll get photos up soon.

That night it was sad to leave Selcuk! Saying goodbye to some great people we'd been hanging out with at the hostel. Even if it was only about a day and a half!

Heading to our hostel in istanbul, we met some other girls going the same way. We spend the morning wandering around Istiklal street And the area around the Galata tower. I chose to stay in a different hostel in a different are this time. After an afternoon nap, te evening began!

We sat by the tower drinking. There were loads of people there! A guy selling popcorn, muscles, people playing music and dancing, street performers... You name it!even a homeless man collecting everybody's empties. There had been a big championship soccer game earlier in the day, and fans of the winning team were in the streets shouting and celebrating and playing with flares... It was a great atmosphere. When we he enough of it though we headed for the bars and a night out.

I spent the next day wandering around and getting lost in the city with a friend. Visited some mosques And the huge aqueduct. We also attended a sort of informafion session on mosques and Islam. I learnt a lot. Afterwards we went back in to the Blue Mosque. It was a good experience to go back in, knowing so much more.

M last day I visited Topkapi palace. The pavillions and views over the Bosphorus were the best parts. The treasuries were pretty awesome too, but somehow ruined my the lines and massive number of people. Especially the one guy who happened to be behind me frequently, with his belly pressed up against my backpack. That night I enjoyed my last baklava and nargile in Turkey!

This morning I was up early and all ready for my flight only to find it not listed on the board at the airport. Great! The flight was cancelled. Then the people at he airport gave me he runaround to try to resolve the whole thing. Long story short, i ended up on a flight 3 hours later.

I sat next to a woman from Jordan and got to chat wih her briefly. It was neat- in Turkey you don't really see the women around much. Or at least they're always heavily outnumbered by the men. I also

Met a really interesting guy at the airport. American, living in Mostar with his German wife and kids. He was with an NGO and came over after the war and stayed! He was going back home after a 1 year contract in South Sudan. He had some interesting things to say.

And I finally made it to Sarajevo. The cherry on the cake is that the cab driver dropped me off at the wrong place. I made it where I was supposed to be, eventually, and went for a walk. So far so good. I'm really liking this city and can't wait to see more of it and learn about it. I've got a walking tour set up for tomorrow. I can't wait!
