Arrived in San Francisco
April 4, 2008 - San Francisco, California, United States
Well we arrived after a long bumpy flight! It has been an interesting few days. Weather is sunny but there is a chilly wind most days. Our hotel is right in the central city which is great but it is quite noisy at night. The city is very very busy and a diverse range of people. There are lots of homeless people and people asking for money all the time, the general population just seems to ignore them so that is what we are doing also. We have done most of the tourist things so far and tomorrow we are off to Alcatraz which should be cool. Rosie is struggling with the food, everything is deep fried and large portions and there is no sign of anything very kiwi yet. Hamburgers and fries are everywhere! We have not met any kiwis as yet, we met a nice swedish guy on the plane and an american lady from Monteray who gave us her phone number. We leave San Fran on Thursday and head to probably the Monteray area....The roads look a bit scary too but we will get that sussed hopefully! Can't find anything that resembles a supermarket, not sure if they even have them as there are markets all the time. They have these big stores called Walgreens Pharmacy and everyone seems to buy stuff from there! More like the $2 shop but more expensive! We have been on the cable cars and this thing called the muni most days, it seems to be the most effective form of transport and everyone loves them. Some of the roads have tracks built in and these old electric trains travel the roads. Tourists love them and get there photos taken hanging off the cable cars! Lots of different aspects to San Francisco - Flashy department areas, Old school San Francisco with old Victorian Buildings etc, China Town where lots of people live in 1 apartment with no washing machine or fridges. Their clothes are hanging out on the fire exits every few days! We are not sure how safe it is to travel around at night time so we hang out in town all day and then come back to our hotel early evening. Got in a bit of a dodgy area last night coming home with lots of homeless people....was a bit of a worry! There are also lots and lots of limo's driving around - our tour guide told us that San Francisco is a rich city!

I see you went to Fishermen's Wharf.
If people come up to you and tell you a story about being stranded and need bus fare to go somewhere, say sorry and keep on moving. Homeless people are a way of life in the US, some even prefer it.
Remember I think Muni doesn't give change
Spend the $$ and see the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Recall John Steinbeck and East of Eden as you walk Cannery Row.

Pleased you are having a good
time.Things are good back here.
Love Mum and Dad.
