China!

April 5, 2008 - Xiamen, China

We'll we're not in prison or hospital yet so we've survived the first few days! Its so weird being here where we seem to be the only Europeans and hardly anyone speaks a word of English so you end up muddling through half conversations with your hands and the trusty as ever guide book. We landed in Guangzhou and got our first real feel of China. The city seems to have this permanent fog or smog over it, its so close its almost claustrophobic because you feel like you cant get away from it. There is no blue sky and the sun can only be seen as a distance blur.

We mnanaged to scrape our way though booking a ticket at the trainstation, that was interesting though, luckily a young girl jumped to our rescue so we got the right train. The rest of the day we hired a tandem bike from our Hostel and cycled along the river, well I say cycled it was the best we could do not to crash! We got a little lost but in was was good because we got to explore some back alleys and small old residential places that you wouldnt have seen from the road!

Today though we have moved on and are now a 14hr train trip up the coast in Xiamen. It was a long train ride and we're suffering today but was deff intersting trying the cheapest seats first! This place we are staying is actually an Island and so far from what we've seen wandering around its pretty beautiful, some great architecture.
