So, back in January, I saw an advert for an African overland trip... They were advertising 50% off on a trip going from Cape Town, up through Namibia into Botswana, through Zambia and back down to Kruger, eventually ending in Jo’berg. All done in a big truck and camping along the way.

This was just TOO much temptation for me to handle. It ticked all the boxes:
1. It was 50% off – bells starting going off in my head – 50% off – MUST BUY!
2. It was going through Africa by overland truck – which is something I have dreamed about (weird I know – but I’ve heard SUCH good stories)
3. Alex and I have been talking about going to ALL these places.
So, after a day of calculating and a restless night twisting and turning and dreaming of game drives, I came up with the BEST idea! I would buy the trip for 2 and give it to Alex on his b'day.
We’d be 'somewhere' and he would be thinking that our travelling would soon be coming to an end, then on his b'day I could give him a card and inside it would say:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY. We’re going to Namibia, Botswanna & Zambia!
He would LOVE it!
So I did it. I booked the trip. I was so excited I found it REALLY difficult not to ring Yeo up straight away and scream: “We’re overlanding through Africa Baby!!”
But I managed to suppress the feeling and tried to remember how good the surprise would be. Over the next two months Alex brought up wanting to go to Namibia and the Okavango Delta MANY times, and each time I would just say: “mmm” and try to sway the conversation in a different direction. But last saturday it just became TOO much to bare. We went to a TNT travel show and Acacia Africa had a stand there – of course Alex darts straight for their stand, opens their catalogue, finds the exact tour I bought and starts asking the Acacia guy loads of questions about it. I started saying I didn’t really want to go to Namibia or Botswanna (?!) but he just said: “what are you talking about – we’ve been wanting to go for ages”.
Long story short: I eventually blurted out :
“We’re going, we’re going – I booked it – there - you spoiled your b'day surprise!”
His face was Brilliant though. I wish I had a camera. He just couldn’t believe it!
Yip, it felt pretty good!
I must say – I’m glad I can talk to him about it now... The silence was KILLING me!
