Ulaanbataar, Mongolia

May 11, 2010 - Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

I was expecting all of Mongolia to be really 'rough' and hard going but we checked into the Golden Gobi hostel and its really nice and relaxing and Clean! We have a chill out area and lounge and big kitchen..

There's no two ways about it: The city is big and ugly - a soviet style concrete 'jungle' but I love it! There's mountains surrounding the city, the sun is shining and the air is thin and icy.  There are very few westeners here and a lot of really trendy young Mongolians.  The city is not at all what I was expecting.. with big brands everywhere and a lot of really funky cocktails bars and really good restaurants.  I had the best steak I've possibly ever eaten - in Ulaanbataar ?! very suprising!

At the top of the hill is a big temple and a working monastry where 900 Buddhist monks learn and practice Buddishm.  Its so peacefull up there, there's a lot of pigeons and prayer wheels and quite a few old Mongolians dressed in traditional dress praying and kissing the prayer flags.  Its really beautiful up there and the area has a strange calming effect on you, I followed the Mongolians and turned the prayer wheels myself.. and couldn't help feeling all "spiritual" :-) my prayer for a western style toilet on our trip into outer Mongolia was sadly : not heard though! :-/
