Outer Mongolia (Hardcore, you know the score! ;)

May 15, 2010 - Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Jinnie and I just got back from the 'ass end of knowhere' which is 'Outer Mongolia' :) We managed to go four days without a shower and had to crap in the forest! Nice ;)

Jinnie loved it (as I'm sure you can imagine), and the traumatised look on her face as she shuffled back to our Ger after that first trip out into natures toilet was priceless! I'm cruel aren't I (!?) No, she was fine really, I'm just poking fun :) Anyway...

Mongolia's a pretty big place, and there aren't really any roads to speak of once you get out of the city, so we had to off road out to the nomad family we were staying with. Their Ger was actually three Ger's joined together, and the family was made up of a gran, her daughter and son-in-law, their little daughter and about 200 goats ;) Jinnie just loved the baby ones that seemed to be running about everywhere - and unlike most animals they didn't seem to get scared off by her ridiculous 'Elmira Fud' over-petting ;) Which was nice.

Inside, the Ger's were much more colourful than I expected and quite cozy, although (as we found out on the first night) absolutely freezing once the sun goes down outside - especially if your girlfriend steals the only blanket and effectively leaves you with two sheets of tissue paper to sleep under! The food was actually better than I was expecting, although since I was expecting sheep testicle soup that probably wasn't hard. We mostly had mutton and rice, but they did serve up some really good little fried dumplings one time.

Anyway, I'd probably better get off this computer as a little queue seems to be forming for it. Doh! Should have brough my laptop!

Oh! Forgot to mention we met THE dirtiest boy in the known universe! He was hillarious and really playful - but literaly lived dirt! He just rolled around in it non stop ;) Pictures to follow...

My fiancee and I are moving to Mongolia (from the US) in a few months time. It's interesting to see these pictures as we've never been there before. Hope to get a few more insights about the country from your blog before we head over there.
