Saigon (HCMC), Vietnam

June 23, 2010 - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

"...Saigon... Shit. I'm still only in Saigon..." Well actually, we were both borderline ecstatic to be in Saigon (obviously Martin Sheen never got stuck in Phu Quoc!). The weather on the island never really picked up, so we changed our plans and booked flights out of there... Of course nothing is ever THAT easy, and some sort of huge monsoon storm kicked off, everywhere started flooding, and they delayed the flights all day! Then cancelled them! We were not impressed. The next morning we woke up and it was still thunder and lightning, but we went to the airport anyway and eventually the weather calmed down and our flight actually left. I can't tell you how thankfull we both are to be off that f***ing island. I thought we'd never get to leave!

So Saigon... yeah... well it's mostly just a sea of Vespa's really. But it's got a pulse - it's one of those places where you feel things are really happening (unlike Phu Quoc ;) and there's an energy about it. Plus there's loads of home comforts :) which Jinnie and I are always on the hunt for at the moment. I guess you can only eat so many noodles before the novelty starts to wear off and you "just want a f***ing normal ice-cream!!!!!" ;) We checked into what was basically a hotel (ie; NOT in our budget!) and just watched cable TV ALL DAY! Hahahaha! I LOVED IT :)

In-between watching back-to-back popcorn movies and A-Team re-runs, I was flicking through a guide to the Mekong Delta that we brought with us and found a wonderful bit of choice info out about the Vietnamese coffee's Jinnies been knocking back ever since we got here... turns out they're made from coffee beans which have been lovingly ground down in the stomaches of little Weasles (!?) and then pooped back out again! Hoorah!!! Trust me, I wasted NO TIME in letting the African know about that one :)

Erm... what else!? Both of us have managed to clock up more than a few mini-freak-outs in the last few days about the total lack of queing in this part of the world! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! It's so strange to me that everyone seems fine with it...!?  Oh, and we went to the war museum here earlier today - it's a bit like a bigger version of the one at the killing fields in Cambodia and is obviously not a particuarly cheery experiance! Again, I'll leave it at that...! And now we're off on another loooooong train ride in a few hours - up to Da Nang and then on to Hoi An once we get there. The weather seems a lot better here in Saigon, so maybe we'll get that beach time we missed out on when we get there...?

Hahaha, this pretty much says it all for Saigon...

Hilarious that you're freaking out about a lack of queuing... how very British of you! And you know that weasel poo coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world? Not all of it, I guess there's a specific weasel/bean combo but you get my point :-)
Glad you have some comforts... it's amazing what shit TV you'll watch when you finally get the opportunity to hear English again! Love and hugs xxx
