Food & Class

January 23, 2008 - Uppsala, Sweden

Well, I attended my first class yesterday morning!

Fortunately Kailey is in the class with me, so we took the bus into the city and walked our way across town another 15 minutes or so to get to class.  It was a much longer journey than we both expected.  On our way to class that morning it was probably the most beautiful setting I have seen so far in Sweden.  Snow had fallen over night, and it wasn't cloudy.  You can see this in the picture that I most recently updated.
We finally found the right door to go in to find our class, and when we walked in we realized we were in a house.  We all sort of looked at each other (about 10 other students arrived at the same time we did) wondering what to do.  We saw a coat rack with shoes lined up on the floor. The professor, a very happy German woman, told us to take off our coats, so we did that, most of us took off our shoes.  The class was in much more of a dining kind-of-room than a classroom.  All 15 students crammed into the room that was not quite big enough.  We all went around and introduced ourselves, said a bit about why we wanted to take the course.  Both professors were really happy so many people had taken the class.  There was a Japanese girl, a few Canadians, 5 French, a girl from Holland, a guy from Michigan and another girl from Illinois, who goes to U of I.
After about an hour of class, we took a break.  We all went upstairs, and there was tea and coffee, bread and cheese.  So we all stood around, and chatted.  We were all really excited that our class involved sitting around without shoes, talking, and taking a break in the middle for tea.  Basically the only class I am responsible for taking for the next 6 or so weeks is awesome.

So being here I have to make my own food, either by myself or with my friends.  Either way, we are all a little clueless about making yummy food.  At some point, probably soon, I am going to get realllly sick of pasta, salad, and bread.  So if anyone has suggestions, like easy to do recipes or advice, feel free to give me some tips!
