Getting to Know Cusco

November 15, 2012 - Cusco, Peru

Slept until about 11am this morning! Wonderful, but I missed breakfast! So I headed down to Cusco's main plaza for a spot of breakfast. The plaza is really quite nice, with a large green fountain in the middle, the cathedral on one side, a large church on another side. I found a place on the second floor for a spot of breakfast S/. 18 soles for a hearty American breakfast! Not bad!

After breakfast, I wandered around the colonial centre for a bit. The place is full of street vendors trying to push anything from a finger puppet through to a full alpaca (perhaps) rug. I was tempted by some of the paintings that were on offer, but for the time being I helpd back! There is a long way to go yet!

In the afternoon I followed the instructions of the guys from the hotel, and wandered down to Korikancha - The Inca Temple of the Sun. According to my guide book, this was one of the most important Inca sites in the whole of the Inca Empire. From outside, all you can see is a large Spanish church built on top of the site, but once inside, it is really quite incredible. It reminded me of an episode of Crystal Maze! Entrance was only 10 soles, which is about 2 quid - not bad for a few hours of touring!

Am in an internet cafe on the plaza at the moment, but gonna head back now, and probably chill out for a little while. Then head out for some food and a beer or two!
