So we left Iguana Ranch on Monday and took the bus from Duncan to Mill Bay where we heaved on our backpacks and started walking to Bamberton Provincial Park where we planned to set up camp.
Man, those packs were freaking heavy! We thought we could do all 10 km, but after two or three, we started sticking out our thumbs. Suzanne Edwards picked us up and drove us all the way to the park. Thanks Suzanne!
The campground is beautiful and we have it all to ourselves. Nobody else is crazy enough to camp in the middle of the week in March.
We walked through part of the campsite that is still closed (for the winter) and took some pictures (see below) of the damage from the storms this past winter.
On Tuesday, we went to Cowichan Bay for a few hours and Eric drooled over all the wooden boats there, and got some good tips from a local shipwright, also named Eric.
Today we're in Shawnigan Lake, checking out the sights and tomorrow we will take the Mill Bay ferry to Brentwood Bay, a 25-minute ride to the other side of the Saanich Inlet. We hope to meet up with Eric's parents on the weekend for a quick visit, if they can make it.
Here's one story you might enjoy:
We bought groceries in Duncan before we came out to Mill Bay. Our food included a small glass jar of basil pesto. We thought it was perfect because it had a screw on lid, so if we didn't eat all one day, we could save it for the next day.
At camp that first night we realized we had nothing besides some grocery bags to put our food into. So, since bears aren't a threat here, we thought it would be better to store the food in our tent, rather than out on the picnic table where squirrels and birds could get into it.
In the morning, we awoke to the aroma of basil pesto. Yup, somehow the lid wasn't screwed on tight and the pesto had leaked out all over the place. Thankfully, it didn't get on our sleeping bags or clothes and within a half hour we had the mess cleaned up. We decided to eat the remains for breakfast. The smell was almost too much.
Otherwise, we are doing great, and loving this unscheduled and unstructured lifestyle. Hope you all are somehow managing life without us! Ha ha.
