Puerto Viejo

August 10, 2008 - Limón, Costa Rica

for my last weekend in costa rica, i decided to go to the Caribbean side of the island.  Jamie and I are staying in some really cute cabins, equipped with mosquito netting and hammocks so it kinda feels like we are on our honeymoon, while the guys are all staying at rocking j's, this hippie-style hostel.  its actually a pretty cool place, with a restaurant and a bar, plus its right on the beach.  the unique thing about it is that you have the choice of either sleeping in a tent or in a hammock.  each for only 4-6 dollars a night.  the guys are loving it, but for now at least i think i'm happy in my cabin

today jamie and i rented these sketchy, 50's style bikes to ride to the nearby beach of Playa Uva (grape beach not University of Virginia beach).   the hour ride there was really nice, with the beach on one side and thick jungle forest on the other.  however i definitely did not realize how incredible hard and painful it is to ride on unpaved rodes, or roads with an absurd number of potholes! as i said before, there are no street signs in costa rica, so at one point we thought we were lost and wanted to ask someone for directions. i saw a guy up ahead and was about to call out to him, when we realized he had a machete.   he was just calmly doing some gardening, but jamie and i decided it would be smarter to talk to someone who wasn't carrying a deadly weapon.  we made it to the beach though and just hung out  there all day relaxing and enjoying some delicious freshly made pina coladas.

tonight we are going to try to find a restaurant that is playing live music to hear some of the spanish regaee music that Pueto Viejo is famous for.  however since the only ATM in town has run out of money, which it apparently does often, we are just going to have to hope we can pay for everything with our credit cards!

xoxo
